The Cabinet of Dr Caligari - Film Review

Image result for dr. caligari and the cabinet original movie poster

This is my first film review for the context of my project. I decided to focus on the influence of German Expressionism, particularly the Art group Die Brucke. I found it interesting researching the film, and gaining more in depth understanding of the design of the film.

  1. Hey Liv - I like what you're doing here - a narrow focus, but one which opens out to the relationship between different art forms. A couple of things I noticed: just proof-read to ensure the words you choose are the most precise - for example, you write 'a series of mass murders' - but 'mass murder' means many murders - so what you've written here is inaccurate as it relates to the action of the film, as there are only 2 murders; I think you mean 'a series of murders' maybe? It's great how you compare/contrast 'Fig 1' with 'Fig 2' but if you're referring to a specific artwork, you need to give the title, artist and year as part of the Fig captioning - and likewise for the film still. You always need to be as specific as possible when it comes to using and citing sources. You've got that great quote in there about the 'bridge between art and cinema' - but actually I'm confused to what exactly the quote refers - is Griffin saying that Caligari is the bridge, or is it in reference to Fig 1, or is it in reference to 'Die Brucke'? We're going to do a bit of work around introducing and using quotes next week, and I'll cover some of the tips then. Short version - well done, this is a clear attempt to link your research to the film.

  2. Hi Liv,
Well done on getting your first review out there! :)
Yes, as Phil has already mentioned, just check that the words you are using are the best ones for the job - for example you say, ' the paranoia and distress of the characters become fluent to it’s viewers'... would 'apparent' be more meaningful than 'fluent' perhaps?

Good start though - looking forward to reading the next one!
